It’s Gonna Be Legen….wait for it…..

12 01 2012

DARY!  Hey everyone!  My name is Marissa and I’m the newest writer for the lovely ladies here at Hockey’s Finest.  I’ve been a hockey fan for most of my life, but now I get to show these to my mommy and convince her that her “tomboy” of a daughter might actually do something productive with that obsession.  I’ll be following most of the Western Conference, so get ready for some sweet blog-lovin’ for the California teams, and I’ll attempt to be nice to the Vancouver Canucks.  But I can’t help it if the Wonder Twins get on my nerves.

Now, before anyone gets on my case about this, let’s get one thing straight:  Yes, I’m from the Chicago-area (first suburb north).  No, I am not a bandwagon Blackhawks fan.  I repeat:  there are no bandwagons that I’m currently on.  Let me tell you a little story, children.  My first hockey game was at the tender age of 5, Chicago Blackhawks vs. St. Louis Blues.  There were four fights in the first period and, according to my dad, I was cheering and jumping up and down for every single one of them in a cute floral dress.  So yeah, you could say I got started young. (Right there with ya, M. Starting early = the hardest habit to kick. I’m addicted and proud to admit it. -L)

Someone's gonna go on timeout

But let’s get down to the cold, hard facts, people.  I live in a (now) great hockey town, with a team that isn’t too hard to look at. (If you want brownie points, you can send me PKane in a box for my birthday. You have until August to seal the deal. -L)

Age:  20

Hometown Team:  Chicago Blackhawks

Favorite Team:  Chicago Blackhawks (what can I say, I’m loyal), but if I was forced to pick another team that I lurve, it would have to be the either the New York Rangers or the Anaheim Ducks.  I have a soft spot for Brandon Dubinsky, and Bobby Ryan and I made a Twitter connection.

Still have no idea what he was talking about

Future hubby:  Jonathan Toews aka Captain Sexpanther.  60% of the time it works every time. (S will NOT be happy about this. But– she’ll have to deal. -L)

Wish-he-was-my-grandpa player:  Stan Mikita.  Dude was the bidness back in the day.

Coach I admire:   Mike Babcock (Red Wings).  I know, it’s almost a crime for me to say anything positive about the Red Wings as a Blackhawks fan, but you can’t deny that they have one stellar team, and Babcock knows how to coach them (every year they’re a given to get into the playoffs).  I think that rivalry is one of the greatest in sports, not just hockey, but it’s one built on respect.  I went to the first Blackhawks-Red Wings tilt this year (HOLY CRAPOOLA it was awesome), and even though every cheer from Hawks fans was “DE-TROIT SUCKS”, I know every legitimate hockey fan in that building was thrilled to be in the same building as Lidstrom and Datsyuk.  Sick mitts, those two.

Twitterbug:  Bobby Ryan.  Like I said, we have a special bond.  And I really want to know what he was talking about.

Least Favorite Team:  Vancouver Canucks and Philadelphia Flyers.  DUH.  I would say the Red Wings, but they’re a truly talented team.  I feel like Vancouver and Philly are filled with a bunch of goons.

Least Favorite Player:  Truthfully, it used to be Dan Carcillo (he was a PEST in the Finals against Chicago), but now that he’s a part of the Blackhawks and I’ve seen his personality more, he’s actually one of my faves.  Plus Kaner needed another guy to bromance with while Captain Sexpanther sulked about people being mean.

Favorite Hockey Memory:  It’s a TIE!  For my 20th birthday, my parents surprised me with a Jonathan Toews jersey (I screamed in the middle of a restaurant), which was AH-MAZING.  Then, obviously, the Red Wings-Hawks game on December 30.  Fantastic way to close out 2011, Captain Sexpanther scored on a penalty shot, and our seats were right behind the penalty box.  Unforgettable night for sure.

Non-hockey related fun facts:  I can quote almost any movie at the drop of a hat, I do pretty good impressions of Sarah Palin, Harry Caray, and the Swedish Chef (yeah, you read that right), and I once held the door open for Joe Biden at a movie theater in Washington, DC.

But those are stories for another day, kids :) I can’t begin to tell you how excited I am to be writing for Hockey’s Finest, but you can be it goes a little something like this:

Iiiiiin West Philadelphia, born and raised

You stay classy, hockey fans! (HAH! Classy hockey fans…HAHAHA…what a thought. -L)

Holy Mother of God

No words can describe what S & I think of this picture…

Coming to a news stand near you on Friday. Enjoy, ladies. This will be a Puck Bunny’s version of Play Girl — and the wallpaper for my new apartment.

Countdown: 40 days

27 08 2011

So, I was all for doing a Tuuka Rask post…but S won this battle (You’re welcome readers -S). [Insert wise-crack about the–Canucks not winning the Cup so we should give them something–here]

Here you go Canuck fans…

There are Maxime Lapierre days left until our favorite time of the year!!

All kidding aside, Lappy (and the Canucks) are pretty much awesome. And even though they played my hometown team in the Cup Finals–and got VERY nasty–I still love them. Shhh!! Don’t tell any of my Boston friends! I’m already close to being evicted from my own city. (We will happily accept you into the Bolt Brigade down here in Tampa after your eviction! -S)

Anyway, happy 40 days left on this countdown. And we’re even closer to the start of training camp! YAHOO! :)

Stanley Cup Champs!!

16 06 2011

Ok. It’s 6:30am–the morning after Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals and I just got back from Dicks Sporting Goods to get my gear. I’ve slept all of maybe 3ish hours. My voice is nearly gone. My feet are cut up from broken glass (from bar celebrations). I still smell like beer. My flip-flops are ruined. And most of all….I’m an emotional wreck.

I went on the Bruins website this morning and misted up for the millionth time in the past 24 hours.

So proud of my boys. <3

Boston was insane last night. I must have been out of my mind going but my Hockey Buddy called me at work, grabbed clothes from my house, and told me to meet him in Braintree right after work. It makes up for all the times he ditched me on game nights.

Anyway, my night went JUST like the Bruins. Here’s the recap.

During the anthems, we looked like this.

anxious and ready.

When the Bs scored, the bar looked like this.

no joke. I need to retire the jersey I wore last night.

No amount of laundry detergent can get out the smell of last night. The ounces of beer that were spilt on me last night was crazy. I was at a bar with someone who was 6’9”….I’m 5’2”….so when they scored–well–you do the math.

When they won, it looked like this.

strangers?? --well, who cares?! we're all family now.

I hugged everyone. EVERYONE. Police, random dads, random kids, random girls, random guys, and the people I was with. Last night, we all bonded over one thing: the Big Bad Bruins.

After it sunk in, we all looked like this. (I won’t lie….I cried tears of happiness)

we did it, bro!

And when we ran the streets…it sounded/looked like this:

I apologize for the awful video. I was getting thrown around like a rag doll.

Well Boston, get ready. It’s going to be a heck of a weekend. Get yo partaaaayyyy hats on! I’ll be praying all morning for the parade to hold off until Saturday morning. If not, then I can’t go and my weekend plans of getting a hotel in the city and following Lord Stanley…are crushed.

UPDATE: Bruins Parade will be Saturday at 11am. Therefore, my plans are as follows.

1. Leave work at 4pm tomorrow.

2. Run the streets of Boston all night to find the Cup

3. Find our spot at the parade route around 4am

4. Celebrate with the boys.

All that = one epic weekend.

Few more things:

This made my heart tingle with pride.

even the Bruins love the Pens <3

And some of you were following me on Twitter last night and saw that I tweeted about a Mr. Kris Letang look-a-like. Well…there’s a little bit of a resemblence. Obviously, no one even compares to Kris…but his eyes were the same color (I melted). Even his nose was a little bit Tanger-like. We also decided he looked like a mix between Tanger and Andy Roddick. Unfortunately, Kris/AndyRoddick looks like he’s 18…at least Tanger looks his age.

If you disagree with me, it was dark in the bar. I couldn’t really see much…but from the lighting we were in, I saw a look-a-like.

The Tanger we all know and love...*sigh*

My look-a-like--ish. Note: I look disgusting. Beer had just been poured over my head. Classy Boston.

Don’t Stop Believin’

15 06 2011

I’m reeling today. There’s no possible way for anyone to bring me down. My focus level is zero and I have the attention span of a 2 year old. Man oh man…what a hockey game.

B's win!

First off, let me just say that we hope Mason Raymond is ok and that the Boston hospitals are taking good care of him. Those boards can be very unforgiving and the poor guy couldn’t have hit them at a worse angle.

Last night, the Big Bad Bruins got inside Luongo’s head early–causing him to be pulled in the 1st period.

Poor guy.

Half of me feels bad for him…the other half of me is angry with him for some of the things he has said the past few days. I can now say that Vancouver is slowly making their way onto my strongly dislike list. S keeps reminding me that both teams are playing cheap and dirty, but like always…I’m being stubborn and swearing that Van is much worse.

The other highlight from last night?? –I basically cried when I saw Nathan Horton on my TV. So happy I got to see his smiling face again (and PS–he made the trip out to Vancouver with the boys! YAY NATHAN!)

If that video doesn’t make you misty-eyed….

The B’s have a chance to bring the Cup home to Boston this weekend and I personally think it’s going to happen. I’m not just saying that because they are my team, I’m saying that based on what I’ve watched the past couple of games. Vancouver is getting tired and we’re getting stronger.  I’ve been known to be wrong before and if I am…I’m be crushed. So crushed, in fact, I may cry. However, I will also cry if they win. Either way, tomorrow looks to be an emotionally draining day for me.

Bring it home, Bruins. Do it for Horton! <3

History Will Be Made…Tonight.

13 06 2011

Whether you are rooting on the Canucks, the Bruins, or neither and are just watching because your teams are out–there is no denying that history will be made tonight at the Garden.

Today, the Cup Caretakers are spit shining Lord Stanley just in case Vancouver ends the series tonight, clinching their first ever Stanley Cup!

All Hail Lord Stanley!

PS– being a Stanley Cup Caretaker is now on my Bucket List. How can I do it??

On the other hand: the Bruins have a chance to win tonight sending the series to a Game 7 which would then give them a chance to end the Stanley Cup drought that has plagued the hockey club since 1972.

Both teams can taste it–you can see the hunger in each and every players’ eyes. They want it. The fans want it. The cities want it. And they want it bad.

Vancouver is already planning their parade route while Boston is washing the Duck Boats.

Quack! Quack!

So, may the best team win.

Dear God, let it be the B’s.

Today in NHL History: Penguins Stanley Cup 2009

12 06 2011

As you all already know, S & I are huge Pens fans…so how could we not celebrate today?? The Pittsburgh Penguins won the Stanley Cup. Pretty sure this was the season our “forbidden” love affair occurred.

For your viewing pleasure:

We could watch these videos all day long. I get goosebumps every time! This day is burned into their memory as much as it is ours. I’m speaking for S when I say this, but she won’t argue, we hope to see this again sometime in REAL soon. (cough::next season::cough)

Mr. How's My Hair?!

JStaal and his amish days...

Sid the Kid

Our Lover Boy!

We love our boys and we’re so proud of them (even with the early exit this season). Mr. 71 and Mr. 87 are resting up and getting ready for the new season. JStaal and Mr. How’s My Hair should be back to training in the near future and hopefully we’ll find out if Max is returning for next season sometime soon. After this past season, S & I have no doubt that we’ll be cheering the Pens on deep into the 2011-2012 Playoffs. This team is going to come back hungry. Watch out!

How appropriate is it that we post this today since tomorrow a new Stanley Cup Champion could be named. Lord Stanley is on his way to Beantown incase Vancouver wins Game 6. I can only hope (and pray) that the Bruins can pull off a win tomorrow night and send this series into a Game 7. I’d love to party with the Cup this weekend. So B’s: win tomorrow, win wednesday, and I’ll see you on the streets of Boston this weekend!
